Barbour is now one of the best-known names in British clothing, but the part that interests us begins with function. Founded in South Shields supplying oilskins and protective garments to sailors, fishermen and mariners, the company built a deep archive of outerwear for specific forms of use: riding, fishing, shooting, motorcycling, walking and life outdoors.
That functional knowledge later became more widely wearable, especially under Margaret Barbour’s leadership. During the 1980s the Bedale, Beaufort and Northumbria carried serious country and outdoor purpose into a broader British wardrobe, acquiring social and cultural meaning without losing their practical foundation.
We have waited to carry Barbour until we could make a genuinely selective range from the parts of the collection that belong here: waxed jackets, liners and related pieces that connect the originals with the more considered heritage interpretations.
