The Bedale is one of Barbour’s essential shapes, originally designed as a short riding jacket. This Heritage Select OS version pushes the proportions further, with more room through the body and sleeves while keeping the raglan cut, rear riding vents, handwarmer pockets and large bellows pockets that define the original. The shorter body gives it an easy, slightly playful line and keeps it deliberately more jacket-like than the Beaufort.

For us, that looser reworking is exactly why it earns a place beside the classics. It is too short to cover a tailored jacket properly, but that need not stop you wearing them together. In Sage Thornproof, the cleaner waxed surface and familiar green colour suit the fuller shape particularly well.

Oversized fit with generous room for layering, but we still recommend picking your normal size. Short riding length gives the jacket its characteristic compact proportion.

The Cloth

Barbour’s 6oz Thornproof is a standard-weight waxed cotton with a smoother, cleaner surface than Sylkoil. The cotton is calendered to give a more even finish, with a firmer hand and slightly greater lustre when new. It is the finish closely associated with Barbour’s early-1980s wax jacket classics, including the Bedale, Beaufort and Border, and with the Sloane Ranger years when the waxed Barbour moved from pure country wear into a broader British style vocabulary. The cloth will still mark, crease and develop naturally with wear. The wax finish gives protection against wind and rain, and can be maintained over time through occasional rewaxing.

The Care

Waxed cotton will mark and crease where handled, and the wax finish may rub off when scraped or abraded. These marks are not faults, but a normal characteristic of the fabric. The surface will also dry and change through age and wear, giving each garment its own appearance over time.

Do not wash, dry clean or tumble-dry.
Do not iron or bleach.
Brush off mud when dry.
Sponge the outer fabric with cold water only.
Never use soap, detergents, fabric softeners or solvent cleaners.
Avoid contact with alcohol-based products.
Regular reproofing with wax will help maintain the weather-resistant properties of the fabric and prolong the life of the garment.
